The big question of Mamma Mia still looms over the sequel 10 years after the first movie - who is the biological father? There are three possibilities when it comes to who the dad might be, made even more confusing by Sophie sharing talents with all three. Her drawing ability might come from Sam, her musical ability from Harry and her lust for travel might come from Bill. While it’s never revealed in the movie, many fans feel it’s Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård). The movie never confirms it but there are a few clues that have fans convinced. Here’s the evidence for each. Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård) (Image: Universal Pictures) Bill’s conversation with Sophie when they first meet led many to think he could be the father. Bill: “I thought you looked familiar. Uh, Sophia?” Sophie: “It’s Sophie.” Bill: “Well, Sophia is the Greek.” Sophie: “Well, I’m named after a Sophia.” Bill: “I used to have a great aunt living on the mainland, named Sophia.” Later at the bachelorette party the link is cemented even further. Bill: “How on Earth did Donna get money to buy this place?” Sophie: “She was left some money by the old lady she looked after when I was little, Sophia, that I’m named after.” Bill: “My Great Aunt Sophia?” Sophie: “I guess.” Bill: “I always heard her money was left to family.” The issue with this is Donna doesn’t know who the father is herself so naming her daughter after his relative wouldn’t really be an indication. (Image: Universal Pictures) BUT Bill runs away, with Sophie following behind him. He’s the first potential dad that she gets excited about before she realises the others are actually just as likely candidates. What’s interesting is during this scene the song [That’s the] Name of the Game was supposed to be sung to Bill by Sophie but it was cut. It would’ve been the only song shared between Sophie and one of her possible fathers. Other fans point to their shared hair colour as a reason as it’s a recessive gene - though this is the movies so genetic hair colour doesn’t really count for much. Pierce as Sam (Image: Universal Pictures) Sam becomes Sophie’s step-dad when he marries Donna, but does that make him her actual dad? They seem to share the most connection in the movie, with Sam having more of a say in how he wants Sophie to act ie not get married, but this doesn’t make him the biological father. Donna did seem to have the longest relationship with him - upping her chances, but the men were all with Donna in a period of a few weeks. (Image: Publicity Picture) Harry is one of the potential fathers. We find out Donna was the first woman he loved - and the last. He is seen after the wedding with a man from the island. Donna writes in her diary on August 11th that Harry was very sweet, and understanding when they were together. Donna showed him the island and slept with him “dot dot dot.” They met in Paris and he followed her to the island. While it’s possible Harry is the father, he seems the least likely due to the small time frame and backstory the producers then created for him.
